Co-founder and director Carlos López Estrada speaks on how the production company supports creatives looking to get their careers off the ground

This [film] industry is insular. As much as we keep trying, this industry struggles to welcome new voices because making movies costs so much. The risk involved in taking a chance on an early-career filmmaker is very high; not a lot of people feel comfortable taking that risk. That results in an impossibly high bar or impenetrable wall into our industry and a lack of diversity and different perspectives. Antigravity is trying to become an answer to that problem — a support system for people who need help.

All of the work we're doing — empowering first-time filmmakers, offering free film education, creating community initiatives — it’s all designed around making our industry more welcoming. From the beginning, we made the conscious decision to foster the emerging filmmaking community, because filmmaking is usually a lonely trajectory. We wanted to make sure people feel supported and surrounded by peers.

That has resulted in something beautiful: Our community has kept growing. Our events are attended by hundreds of people. When we released our first movie, Dìdi, a simple yet very personal story with no huge celebrities leading it and a grassroots approach, people showed up to theaters. It was a good example of how a small-budget movie has the potential to break through and impact a lot of people. We're going to keep doing it and hopefully tell more stories, support more filmmakers, and make more movies.
